Quilliam’s Senior Researcher in Islamic Studies, Dr Usama Hasan, featured in the programme Ramadan Diaries on Channel 4 on Wednesday 10 July.
The short programme featured Usama going to Pole Hill with his three sons to look for the moon at the end of the month of Shabaan. If they had seen the new moon, it would have signified that the month of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, would begin the next day. Having failed to see it, they concluded that Ramadan would not begin the following morning, but the morning after instead.
