In May 2014, Dr Usama Hasan, Quilliam’s Senior Researcher in Islamic Studies, was a guest speaker of the Student Council of Turkey at an international one-day conference on ‘Queried Evolution’ (Evolution Under Scrutiny) at the Ataturk University in Erzurum, Eastern Turkey.

The conference was attended by 500 students of the university. Dr. Hasan’s presentation, ‘Islam and the Theory/Fact of Evolution’ quoted John William Draper’s description of “the Mohammedan theory of evolution of humans from lower life-forms” and presented the history of evolutionary ideas amongst early and mediaeval Muslim thinkers. He further described controversies within Muslim discourse around evolution, from outright theological rejection to full scientific acceptance, and outlined ways in which the theology and science of evolution may be reconciled.

Quilliam would like to thank the Student Council of Turkey and the Ataturk University (Erzurum) for hosting Dr. Hasan.
