On 16th June 2009, Ed Husain and Professor Tariq Ramadan spoke at an event entitled ‘Is there One Islam?’ at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford, hosted by Weidenfeld Scholars from over 22 countries.

In a packed lecture theatre, Nadia Oweidat from St Anthony’s introduced both speakers and asked them challenging questions on intellectual discourse of Muslim pluralism, scriptural interpretations, and gender equality.

Ed paid tribute to Tariq Ramadan’s work and scholarship in opening up key debates and helping pioneer discussions on Western Muslim identities. However, Ed was critical of nuancing and contextualising any given phenomenon to the extent that there was no substance to a discussion.

Both speakers were in agreement on most key issues, while there was healthy debate around some topics.

The Q&A session was also a rigorous exchange of views.
