On the 20th of October, Quilliam’s Head of Outreach and Training, Ghaffar Hussain, spoke at a conference in Weisbaden, Germany. The conference was organised by the Bundeskriminalamt and had over 400 senior government officials from across Europe in attendance. Ghaffar spoke about deradicalisation and emphasised the importance of distinguishing it from disengagement. He focused on three key factors, Identity, Greviances and Ideology and he discussed the ways in which these three factors interact to create extremism. He then touched upon what needs to be done to ensure that young people are not recruited by extremist groups, with a particular emphasis on civic identity in a European context.
