On the 11th June 2014, Quilliam’s Managing Director, Ghaffar Hussain, spoke on a panel at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) on the topic of ‘Blasphemy and apostasy’. His talk focused on how recent trends towards extremism, inspired by Islamist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), have allowed Muslim-majority societies to become places where in some instances individual choices and free-expression are stifled in the name of religion. He shared the panel with a number of other human-rights activists and the event was attended by diplomats from around the world.
