Dr. Usama Hasan, Senior Researcher (Islamic Studies) at Quilliam, helped to arrange an historic visit by Baroness Caroline Cox of the House of Lords to the Islamic Sharia Council in Leyton, London on 1st May 2012.  The Islamic Sharia Council was established in 1982 and is the largest, oldest and most established of the various sharia councils operating in the UK.  Baroness Cox, who is the author of the Arbitration and Mediation Services (Equality) Bill, discussed her bill, the operation of the Council and issues around women’s rights and gender-equality with Maulana Abu Sayeed and Sheikh Suhaib Hasan, two senior religious scholars who provided a summary of the history and work of the Council.
