Jonathan gave a presentation to 100 teachers on Wednesday at Impero Software’s #KeepingUpWithChange conference for the North of England. Among the participants were Designated Safeguarding Leads, teachers with primary responsibility for the Prevent duty, Headteachers, and Heads of ICT. Jonathan presented on Countering Radicalisation Online, and explained how we should see counter-extremism as a safeguarding priority, improve our approach offline and then apply it online, and consider prioritising Primary Prevention rather than Targeted Prevention. In his workshop session to 40 of the participants in the afternoon, Jonathan shared some resources and ideas for teaching about human rights, addressing grievances, offering alternative narratives to extremism, and building the critical consumption skills of young people. From initial feedback, it is clear that the participants felt the sessions improved their confidence in fulfilling their new Prevent duty, and they thought Quilliam’s resources could help them avoid some of the unintended negative consequences of trying to counter extremism.
