On 7th July 2009, Quilliam Director Maajid Nawaz spoke at the Program on Terrorism and Security Studies held by the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The Marshall Center is a unique U.S. Department of Defense and German Ministry of Defense security and defense studies institute. The PTSS is a five week course designed for military officers, government officials and others working in counterterrorism organizations around the world.
Maajid Nawaz  gave a lecture entitled ‘In and Out of Islamism’ to the PTSS participants, in which he highlighted his experiences as a young man being radicalized and subsequently joining an Islamist party. He then went on to explain the processes that lead to him abandoning Islamist ideology for more democratic and inclusive political ideals.
To date graduates of Marshall Center resident programs are serving in many highly important positions around the world, they include ministers, chiefs of defense, ambassadors and MPs.
