Quilliam Present at the European Parliament

BRUSSELS – Quilliam International’s Head of Islamic Studies, Sheikh Usama Hasan, and Senior Researcher, Sheikh Salah al-Ansari, spoke on two separate panels at the European Conservatives and Reformists Group’s Europe – Muslim World Democracy Forum in Brussels on 19 February 2019. The conference brought together speakers from all over Europe, Africa, and the Levant to discuss strategies for promoting democracy and stability in the face of the resurgence of authoritarianism.

Sheikh Usama addressed the conference on the subject of liberal democracy and minority rights: the role of education, religion and cultural rapprochement. His contribution addressed the process by which Islamic jurisprudence has moved towards a position of harmony with liberal democratic values, and discussed the further developments which could take place. Sheikh Salah spoke on a panel considering democracies the Muslim World, considering both interpretations of Islam that promoted democratic engagement, and the importance of institution-building and Reform.
