Quilliam Present Seminar at the Mayor of London’s Office

LONDON – On Thursday 4 October, a team led by Quilliam International’s Dr Usama Hasan and Dr Salah al-Ansari presented an introductory seminar to the Mayor of London’s office on our work to challenge the ISIS theological manual, the Fiqh al Dima (the “Jurisprudence of Blood”).

The seminar provided an overview of the Fiqh al Dima and explained the central role that it has played in legitimating the most extreme conduct of ISIS, including suicide bombings, attacks on civilians and the taking of slaves. We then discussed the manner in which a proper reading of the Golden Age sources of the 14th and 15th centuries rebutted key planks of takfiri jurisprudence.

The team concluded by explaining the importance of a firm grounding in the theology that underpins ISIS and Al Qaeda conduct for policy makers and those involved in implementing capacity building and deradicalisation programmes. We also discussed examples of former jihadists who had been persuaded by a fuller reading of classical Islamic jurisprudence.
