Head of Islamic Studies Presents at City of London School

LONDON – Quilliam International’s Head of Islamic Studies Dr Usama Hasan, addressed Sixth Form students at the prestigious City of London School for Boys, along with Chloe Hadjimatheou of the BBC, regarding the Salman Rushdie affair & marking 30 years since Ayatollah Khomeini’s death-sentence fatwa against the British writer.

At the time in 1989, Usama was a Carpenter Scholar at the school, and already a politically active Muslim.  He borrowed the school library’s only copy of “The Satanic Verses” and kept it out of circulation for 8 months in order to prevent others from reading it.  He returned the book upon completing his education at the school that year.  Dr Usama is featured in Episodes 3 and Episode 6 of the BBC’s new 10-part podcast series, “Fatwa,” about the Rushdie affair.
