Quilliam Foundation co-Director Ed Husain met with leading writers, intellectuals, political activists, and journalists in Bali, an island that still lives in the shadow of the 2002 terrorist attack. This included attending the annual Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, this year entitled “Tri Hita Karana – the Balinese concept of balancing Man, Nature, God.”

Indonesia provides a working example, though faces an increasing number of challenges, of Islam in harmony with indigenous cultures. Quilliam is seeking to explore ways in which Western Muslims can learn from this and other examples of integrationist Muslim communities.

Quilliam’s Global Affairs Unit is networking with Muslim counter-extremism initiatives in Asia and the Middle East to deliver a coordinated, global response to an international threat.
