Quilliam, in association with the Forum for Discussion of Israel and Palestine (FODIP), hosted Dr. Iyad Zahalka, Qadi of the Jerusalem Sharia Court, the highest Muslim office in Israel’s system of religious courts that has survived since Ottoman and British rule. Usama Hasan, Senior Researcher in Islamic Studies at Quilliam, facilitated high-level meetings for Dr. Zahalka at the Ebrahim College and the Islamic Sharia Council, both based in London. At Ebrahim College, the Qadi addressed 120 students about the Sharia court system in Israel that benefits from religious freedom in a pluralistic democracy, with religious laws being subordinate to civil laws. Dr. Zahalka later addressed similar topics in two sessions at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, one of these was chaired by Dr. Hasan of Quilliam.
