Quilliam launches BNP awareness programme

23 October 2009

Nick Griffin’s appearance on Question Time last night provided ample evidence that well-informed individuals are able to effectively undermine and counter the British National Party’s racist arguments.

Following on from this, it is necessary for mainstream politicians to double their efforts in countering the BNP and their arguments in key cities ahead of next year’s general election.

To help, Quilliam is launching a series of awareness programmes to assist political parties in combating the BNP’s racist, and often overtly anti-Muslim, rhetoric.

The initial courses will be run by Quilliam’s directors and will be aimed at MPs, Prospective Parliamentary Candidates (PPCs) and special advisors. Subsequent courses will be rolled out to political activists around the UK.

These courses follow Quilliam’s recent briefing, In Defence of British Muslims: A response to BNP racist propaganda, which provides a systematic rebuttal of ten of the BNP’s main accusations against British Muslims and their religion.

Quilliam’s Outreach and Training Unit (QOTU) continues to hold training sessions across the country on Islamist extremism.

Quilliam director Maajid Nawaz will discuss the BNP and other issues when he appears alongside Jacqui Smith, the former Home Secretary, on BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions today, Friday 23 October at 8pm.
