On October 5th 2009 Quilliam delivered a series of seminars in Pendle to Imams, stakeholders and the local communities.
The seminar was delivered by Ishtiaq Hussain in Urdu and English. Imams from ten different mosques in the area, representing different theological backgrounds, were brought together to discuss radicalization and why it happens in the UK. The Imams agreed that violent Islamist ideology was one of the main factors behind radicalization. They also agreed that more needed to be done to tackle this issue and welcomed Quilliam’s contribution to this complex debate.
This seminar focused on looking at why radicalization occurs, understanding how to distinguish between Islam and Islamism and looking at some of the recruitment tactics used by Islamist organizations. The seminar was attended by 30 delegates including the local MP Gordon Prentice and was delivered by Quilliam trainers Ishtiaq Hussain and Talal Rajab.

Ed Husain (co-director of Quilliam) took part in a lively Q/A session with community members, made up of 70 people, most of whom were Muslim. Issues such as homosexuality, the Hijab and Quilliam’s output were discussed. Many of the attendees expressed admiration and support for Quilliam’s work.
All seminars were very well received and all attendees gave very positive feedback. Quilliam would like to thank Building Bridges Pendle for organizing the seminars and look forward to working together in the future.
