Rashad Ali speaks at Institute of Ideas with Bishopsgate Institute

Thursday 6 March, 7pm

Still the opium of the masses? Religion and radicalism

Rashad Ali spoke at the above event and discussed secularism and its various interpretations, Islamism and it being an “irreligious manifestation of modernity” – not religion. The discussion centred around Islamist philosophy and its toxic impact on society and religion. In conclusion, he argued for a modern enlightenment, acknowledging that our common history demonstrates modern philosophy, belief in God and intellectual progress were not at odds with each other. We have a shared common human heritage to which Islam has contributed and historically served as a bridge. Thinkers and philosophers such as Averroes conveyed classical philosophy to the modern world.
