Between 3rd and 5th March 2009, Quilliam and local partner, Bargad, held a conference that brought together University Vice Chancellors from across the country to address the issue of radicalisation on Pakistan’s university campuses. The conference aimed to provide a platform for Vice Chancellors to air their concerns on the issue of extremism and to discuss solutions to the problems they had been experiencing on their campuses.

Quilliam Director Maajid Nawaz spoke to conference delegates about his own experience within the global Islamist group Hizb ut Tahrir (HT). He stressed the importance of combating radicalisation on campuses by highlighting how Islamist groups such as HT primarily target university students for recruitment to their extremist cause. Maajid’s talk won support from the audience, with many expressing an interest in the issues that were raised.

The event culminated with the development of an action plan to which conference participants pledged their support.  Several participants invited Maajid on to their campuses to directly meet, engage, and discuss these issues with students and staff.
